Thursday Happenings

by Cate on February 24, 2006

Hey all! Hope everyone is doing good as this week winds quickly to a close. I’m feeling a bit better today – it doesn’t hurt as much when I cough, and that’s always a good thing. The big breakthrough will be when I can go back to sleeping on my stomach; right now, I can’t even sleep on my side … but I’m waiting, patiently.

And speaking of waiting, The Husband has promised to take me out to get my “import fix” at the magazine section of the bookstore this weekend, and I CANNOT wait! I’m dying knowing that all the magazines are sitting there, just waiting for me. I haven’t been out of the house since I came home on Sunday, and can’t drive for at least another few days, perhaps a week, so I’m going a bit stir crazy. The good news is that in the meantime, I’m catching up on all my backlog of magazine reading from what I already have here, and collecting quite the assortment of recipes to dive into once I get back into the kitchen.

No cooking yet, but Nicholas asked me today when we could make cookies, and I promised him that we would this weekend. We’ll also finally resume The Neighbors Dine Over Sunday this weekend, and I’m working on planning that. Something very simple and casual, as I’m still focusing on the “resting and relaxing” part of my surgery recuperation, but a girl’s gotta cook! Until then, stay with me … I promise, recipes are a’coming!

In catching up on my magazine reading, I finally got to the new issue of Fine Cooking Magazine.
Tons of rip-out-worthy recipes in this issue, with highlights on lemons, muffins and braised short ribs being some of the stars. And checking out Fine Cooking’s web site also gave me the heads up on this special issue, Weekend Cooking, that’s on newstands now; so, of course, you know what’s next on my shopping list this weekend, after picking up the imports. ;) Another interesting feature in the current issue was their taste-testing and ratings of semisweet chocolate chips. Their top pick was Guittard, surprisingly enough, followed by Nestle, Tropical Source, Ghiradelli, Baker’s and then Hershey coming in sixth. Hershey – sixth? Ouch. Never heard of Tropical Source before, but will have to start to look out for it. In the meantime, with Nestle as #2, that’s A-OK by me, since that’s the one I usually reach for.

No exciting dinner report tonight. The Husband had to work late tonight, but brought home take-out from Charlie Browns before he rushed off to meet an employee. I was DYING, simply DYING, for a “real dinner,” since I haven’t really had one since last Wednesday; Progresso Soup is good, but it just ain’t cuttin’ it anymore. Charlie Browns’ Horseradish-Crusted Prime Rib with Garlic Mashed Potatoes hit the bill and tasted SO good. Nicholas stole my Caesar Salad, forgoing the Macaroni and Cheese I ordered for him. He’s funny like that.

OK folks, all for tonight. Back to bedrest I go. Until tomorrow … hang in there with me, I promise, we’re cookin’ this weekend!

Get some rest. I know how you feel about not being able to sleep on your stomach. That’s how I sleep and when I had my gall bladder out it was the one thing I couldn’t wait to do.

I’m so addicted to Fine Cooking. I lovingly store my entire collection (from issue 1) on my kitchen bookshelf. I got Weekend Cooking, and I kind of like the way it’s laid out. I’m a total sucker for their special issues.

Glad you’re feeling better!

Those Guittard chips are really good. They had them at the Dollar General for $1.50/bag and I bought the entire shelf of them. They never got more of course and I can’t find them anywhere else around here.

Biscuit Girl – I’ve gotten very close to sleeping on my stomach – hopefully this week. That was one of the drawbacks to being pregnant too. As soon as I had Nicholas, I thought I could go right back to sleeping on my stomach – nobody said anything about pain after he came! ;)

Sheri – I know how you feel – I’m a sucker for any special issues. I subscribe to over 70 magazines, so can’t keep them, but always rip a ton of things out of FC, that’s for sure.

the WebSorceress Cooks – thank you!

Cyndi – sounds like you had a great vacation! Haven’t been to Hawaii since I was little, and The Husband is itching to get there, but SUCH a long plane ride!

Amy – LOL. With all the magazines I get, I could never keep them!

Catesa, Anonymous and The Cookbook Junkie – thank you!
