Healthy Snacking on the Go

by Cate on August 29, 2016

UntitledNow that our Fall routines are underway, I’m getting back into the swing of keeping our refrigerator and pantry stocked with healthy snack items that we can grab on the go. Because between Maddie’s cheer and Girl Scouts, and Nick’s weekly volunteering obligations coupled with the fact that he’s starting high school next week (!!!), well, I want to make it as easy as possible to stay the course.

Healthy snacking is not a new topic on Sweetnicks, but the cast of characters is always evolving. When making my plans to stock our kitchen, I keep a focus on a variety of items. Some sweet, some savory. Some homemade, some pre-packaged. Just an all ’round good balance to satisfy the current need-right-now.

Granola bars are a given, and we all like different ones. Of course. Untitled

This is a tasty homemade granola bar recipe that I love.

Nuts by the handful. I buy big value-size containers, and portion them out into little snack bags, so they’re perfect to grab and go. Untitled

Fresh fruit. Always. The kids like apples. I like bananas and grapes. Maddie and I love clementines.

Cheese sticks. Lately I’ve been eating a few different varieties from Weight Watchers. Because #cheeseismyhappyplace. (When you shop at your local Shop Rite between 9/11 and 9/24, you’ll receive a coupon for $5 off your next purchase when you buy $15 worth of Weight Watchers snacks while supplies last. Some stores will be having a sampling event on 9/18 between 10-4, stop by to try great products and grab a coupon)

Avocado. I know, random. And not so much grab-and-go. But Nick and I will split one, drizzled with a little olive oil, salt, and hot sauce. SO GOOD. Have you tried them broiled? Amazeballs.

Those English Toffee Crunch Bars in the picture above and here? Perfect when you need a little something sweet but are trying your darnedest to stay away from ice cream.

These Banana Chocolate Chip Espresso muffins happen WEEKLY in our home, and with good reason.

Cherry tomatoes. No joke, Maddie eats these like they’re candy. They’re perfect to pop into a little baggie with a small container of homemade dip. Although admittedly, she doesn’t eat the dip. Um, that’s me. Untitled

I think the key to healthy snacking is balance, pure and simple. Whether I’m tearing into a cheese stick (I’ve found the best selection for these and the ice cream treats are at Shop Rite hands down) or snacking on a handful of frozen grapes, I look for items that are filling, healthy, and good for us. Now it’s your turn … what are YOUR favorite snack ideas or recipes?
