Miss Madeline – Four Months Old

by Cate on June 12, 2008

more-peas-please-small.jpgWell technically, she’s 17-1/2 weeks, but who’s counting?  ;)  Madeline had her check-up yesterday and my favorite part was a quote from the first nurse that saw her … “Holy crap, she got big!”  That cracked me up.  True, she has doubled her birth weight, and tripled in length and head circumference since she was born, but her weight is at 61% percentile, so it’s not like she’s freakishly large, you know?  Geesh.

Her height is at 79%, so it looks like we’re set to have another tall one on our hands.  The way Nicholas and Madeline are poised, they’re going to be taller than me!

She only cried when she was weighed, and really, can you blame her?  What female, in their right mind, wouldn’t be cringing a bit when they’re getting weighed, stark naked, in the hallway of the doctor’s office?  Poor munchkin.

Last week, we took the plunge and started adding food to Madeline‘s diet, beginning with rice cereal and making our way through bananas, applesauce and peas.  She has devoured each item including, most surprisingly, the peas.  Maybe there’s hope for another family member besides me liking green vegetables, but then again, I think probably anything is a welcome respite after four months of just formula.

peas-on-my-knees-small.jpgShe gets so excited when we feed her, her legs start pumping as if to say, “More!  More!” and she takes her little fingers and shoves every last speck into her mouth.  If you don’t go fast enough, she makes this guttural grinding, growling noise that is quite unbecoming of a little girl.  When she had the peas last night, she was literally covered from her eyebrows down to her knees.  Peas on her knees.  I kid you not.  Is it any wonder than she goes from the dinner table straight to the tub?

It’s hard to believe we’ve passed the four-month-mark already, but then again, it’s hard to believe that Nicholas is nearly six.  She giggles constantly, especially when Nicholas is goofing off with her, squawks and sings to herself and has started rolling over.  She is currently a card-carrying member of the Secret Rollover Society because, while she has been rolling over daily, no one has seen it… until today.  I put her down to take a nap on her belly, and she wakes up on her back, smiling a big grin at me.  I heard her starting to wake up this morning, so I headed into the room to put away laundry for the last few minutes, and out of the corner of my eye, I started seeing her attempt to roll over.  The doctor yesterday was saying that I should teach her to stretch her arms out over her head and then she can roll over easier, without her arms getting in the way.  Not our Miss Madeline.  How does she roll over?  She swings her diapered bubble butt over, over, over until she does it hard enough for it to roll her over.  Cracked me up.  Baby got back… and uses it.

She is fond of blowing raspberries and having baths, giggling each time she splashes the water hard enough to get up to her face.  She survived her first road trip (Hershey Park!) and went swimming for the first time in a swimming pool.  She gravitates towards the color red and her hair is, so far, the lightest in the family.  She loves when you whisper in her ear and is ticklish on the back of her neck.

Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the next month!

BTW, I’d love to get my hands on her! She looks like she’d be a fun “well baby” check. Those are such bright spots in a pediatrician/medical student’s day! And I just love those growth charts…they let you know so much! As to the peas…I cannot share her love!
