Paging the Tooth Fairy

May 3, 2009 · Narrative

First Tooth
Yesterday morning, the kids and I set out early for a little bit of garage saling.  As we were driving down the road, keeping our eyes peeled for those infamous neon posterboard signs, I hear a shrieking from the backseat.  I turn around, Nick is hysterical and there’s a gush of blood streaming from his mouth.  He is totally freaking out.  I pull over to the shoulder and grab some napkins and hand them to him, trying to calm him down.  He put them to his mouth and then all of the sudden, I see it.  The big hole.  He lost his first tooth!!  I don’t think even he realized what was happening at first either.

It wasn’t loose in the least, and although he’s been anxiously waiting to lose his first tooth for ages now, especially since so many of his friends are already on their second and third, we weren’t expecting it at all.  The only problem?  The tooth has yet to be found.  He was eating at the time, so my hunch is that he swallowed it.  That revelation didn’t help to settle him down in the least.  I quickly reassured him that the Tooth Fairy would still come.  Just like Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, she watches and knows all.  He wasn’t too keen on eating soon after, still a little freaked out by the sudden change in his mouth’s landscape, and the funny speech has already begun.

Back in January, I bought one of these adorable tooth fairy pillows, just waiting for the big moment to strike.  Yesterday afternoon, I wrote the word “tooth” in permanent marker on my hand because I was so afraid that I would forget to leave it under his pillow.  One tooth fairy visit and five dollars later, he has long since calmed down and now is proudly showing off the little gaping hole in his mouth.

Oh, but one thing.  He told me I wasn’t allowed to tell anyone the story unless we knew them sort of well, so, well, you can keep a secret, right?

Five dollars!!! You’re going to wish that you started low… and increased as he loses more teeth :)

I used to get handfuls of change when I was little. We started out w/ dollar bills for our little guy, but he’s now lost many. Last tooth got him $5 and my husband freaked out that I gave him that much money!

FIVE dollars?! Man, the tooth fairy has increased her price since I gave her business. All she ever gave me was a quarter or 50 cents. I bet he did swallow it That’s better than hanging onto it (in his mouth) until it is just hanging by, literally, a string! That’s what I did…such a chicken! :-)

Sarah – after the panic wore off, he was so happy!

Lori and Claire – lol, $5 is only for the first one. $1-3 for all of them after, I’m thinking. Although when I was a kid, mom says I got a Barbie doll for my first one… ;) PS – Claire, oh those hanging ones are the worst!

Congrats to him! (My oldest did the same thing for his first tooth, out of the blue, except the swallowing part.)
My kids always got a bigger amount for the first tooth, then $1 for the rest. And the time one of them lost the tooth, probably swallowing, they left the Toothfairy a note under their pillow and she left one back saying, “Thanks, I found it, your suggestions of where it might be really helped!” He’d lost it at the grocery store and was convinced it was somewhere on their floor.

My children received one in the mail from the tooth fairy, on a pretty paper.

My Nicholas has lost two teeth already. The first one earned him a dollar and a DVD and the second one, a dollar and a toy soldier.

Both times the new tooth arrived before the old one fell out too.

What a precious story, and an even cuter picture. I guess we had a cheap tooth fairy – my kids only got a dollar.

I came from a dysfunctional family, so I never really got anything from the tooth fairy. But, I have a feeling that it doesn’t matter if you gave him a quarter, $1 or $5, I am sure you made it very special for him. Congrats to Nick!

    Congratulations to him!

My daughter lost her first tooth in the foam pit at Gems. We never found that one either. The tooth fairy got a note that read “Dear Tooth Fairy, I lost my tooth. I mean I REALLY LOST my tooth”.

She got $5 for the first and gets $1 for each after that.
