The front room in our home is divided into two sections. My office on one side, and the kids’ (though mostly Madeline’s) playroom on the other. In a fit of I’m-tired-of-this-mess, I cleaned up the playroom and its contents are now in big tubs in the basement while I take the time to sort through everything and purge, donate, and reorganize. The act of which is a post for another day. But in the meantime, I finally decided to move forward with an idea I’ve long since threatened.
No more playroom.
Instead, it will be a reading/homework area for the kids.
I can’t say either are upset about it.
You caught a peek at the work-in-progress wall a few weeks back (more details coming soon, just waiting for a few more things to finish it up).
This weekend, we had to make a stop for Mystic’s job, so I took advantage of the time in the car to make a yarn pom pom garland, which I thought would be a perfect and fun accent for the new reading area.
And no, I wasn’t driving.
When it comes to yarn or anything sewing-related, it’s totally not in my wheelhouse. So know that if I can do this, so can you. And after about an hour in the car, my garland was done. And for just under $7, with plenty of yarn leftover. My kind of quirky decor.
I went with colors that were complementary to the maps and globes that are already in the room.
Once you have your pom poms all done, cut a long piece of yarn in a coordinating color to string the pom poms onto. Using a thick needle (I used an embroidery needle), thread the long piece of yarn through the middle of each of your pom poms. Once they’re all on the garland, you can space them out however you want. I made five pom poms of three different colors and made the garland long enough to span three large windows.
You could make a color coordinating pom pom garland for an upcoming baby shower. A rainbow cake party. An art-themed birthday party. To decorate a little girl’s room.
Hopefully the rest of the room will be finished up this weekend. It’s such a bright, happy space right now. Perfect for the kids.
I can’t tell you how much I love this!
I’m shocked they didn’t put up more of a fight! But your kids like school so much that it’s not really THAT hard to believe. Love the pom poms! I kinda want them hanging from MY ceiling now…
I like the colors you picked out.
