Ever since I got nine inches of hair chopped off back in August, I’m kind of a little obsessed with any hair growth treatment I stumble across.
Especially the homemade kind.
That uses stuff I already have on hand.
Win.
Win.
Win.
Winning. (name THAT has-been celeb)
And if it promises smooth and shiny locks? And scalp exfoliation? And conditioning?
Well that’s just the icing on the cake, isn’t it?
So here’s the thing. Mayonnaise has three important ingredients in it.
For your hair.
The egg yolk. It has lecithin, which is supposed to encourage hair growth.
And vinegar, which is good for exfoliating that scalp of yours (um, and mine).
And oil, perfect for a little extra conditioning.
So the other night, Madeline and I had an at-home Beauty Night. I washed her hair and put it up in curlers for her to sleep on. She’s dying for curly hair, so it’s something we do every now and then. Alternating between the times when I put her wet hair in braids to give her fun little kinks.
And then I put mayonnaise on my hair. I used a third of a cup for my medium length hair. Probably could have used a teensy bit more. But not less.
Once it was applied all over my hair, I tied a plastic shopping bag to my head.
Of course you could also use a plastic shower cap.
But I didn’t have one. This was handy. And free. And recycling.
Some of my favorite words.
Let it sit on your hair for at least thirty minutes and then rinse out, and shampoo and condition as you normally would.
I went to bed with my hair wet, because I hate blow-drying my hair.
When I woke up, it was crazy soft, smooth, and had a little bit of extra fullness.
Of course, I can’t tell you for sure if it helped with hair growth because it’s only been a few days. But so far, pretty happy about the results.
Last night, Mystic was over for dinner. I looked up from my plate and he was staring at me.
“What?”
Did you do something to your hair?
“No, why?”
It looks… different.
“Different good or different bad?”
Different good.
“Oh I know! Mommy put mayonnaise on her hair!”
So there you go. Another one (a guy even!) who thinks mayo hair masks are a good thing.
Even if he couldn’t tell what was different.
And in case you missed it, last week, it was bananas in my hair. You can get the details right here. I already have a plan for next week.
Do you have a favorite at-home beauty treatment? Do tell.
Mayonnaise … in your hair. Oh my. The banana I could handle, lol. But, if it works …
Dude. Totally a biased opinion since I know how much you LOVE mayo. ;)
My coworkers and I were actually talking about putting mayo in your hair just the other day at lunch! Apparently it’s a well known trick in the south. And if a boy noticed, then you KNOW it must have really done something!
If you seriously want your hair to grow, go to GNC and pick up their Ultra Nourish for Hair. I lost a LOT of hair once (a few months after I was sick with a very high fever) and I saw immediate results when I started taking that. I still take it daily. It even makes my eyelashes longer. It will cost you money but if you’re seriously in a hurry to grow your hair, try it. (I have no affiliation with GNC – I just love that supplement.)
Thanks for the tip – will totally go check it out. I feel like it hasn’t grown a lick since August.
I know it’s been several months, but I just wanted to point out that the GNC supplement is 2000 mcg of biotin. You can get a bottle of 5000 mcg capsules for under $10. Biotin helps with hair growth, as well as with nails and skin.
Its gross but the results are breath taking!
