Nick: What I Learned in Fourth Grade

Nick’s last day of school was on Tuesday, and I am now officially the mom of a fifth grader. Ack!  If it wasn’t for these first-day-of-school and last-day-of-school pictures (shown below) that I take, I wouldn’t have noticed any difference. Now that I see them side-by-side, it’s readily apparent. For me, the biggest change is in his shoulders and how he’s standing and carrying himself. A hint of young man slowly starting to emerge.

A few years ago, I started interviewing Nick at the end of the school year, as a quick look back to some of his favorite (and not-so-favorite) parts. I think it’s a fun way to capture the year, and hope that he’ll like looking back on these for years to come. When I dragged him to a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday, I sat him down with the questions so he could write out the answers himself. Just because school is out doesn’t mean we can’t practice handwriting skills!  And by we, I mean him.  My handwriting’s pretty awesome.  And by awesome I mean the most legible in the family.

What was your favorite part of fourth grade?
Having a nice teacher and not a lot of homework.

What was your least favorite part of fourth grade?
Having an annoying kid in my class who stresses me out.

What will you miss about school over the summer?
Learning fractions with my teacher’s rhymes.  I love fractions and Math and Science.

What do you want to be when you grow up?
A doctor because you help people and make good money.

What are some things you learned in fourth grade?
Fractions and division problems with larger numbers.

What excites you about going to fifth grade?
Making new friends (because each grade level has six or seven classes, they mix them up each year so he will be with mostly new kids; funny, I didn’t remind him about last year’s answers and he said the same thing then).

Madeline graduates tomorrow, so her pictures and interview will post sometime next week.  There are all sorts of secrets and surprises for tomorrow’s graduation, and I can’t wait.  She’s the last of the three girls to have graduation this week… onward and upward!
