Letter to My Son – Happy 16th Birthday!

by Cate on August 6, 2018

I’m sure I will say this until the end of time, but man, the years are going by so quickly. I cannot believe that I have a SIXTEEN YEAR OLD. Like, how is that even possible?

It reminds me of that popular parenting quote, “The days are long, but the years are short.”

And here we are, you’re 16.

You are kind and thoughtful and good to your sister (most of the time!). She thinks you hung the moon, and adores you.

You love your family, friends, and pets, though not necessarily in that order.

You’re a hard worker, juggling your job at the library, babysitting, pet sitting, and school, and do it with ease. You still hoard your money like always and think carefully about every dollar you spend (those $75 jeans though!).

You have a good heart, beautiful manners, and respect your elders. You are also, however, a typical teenager with a salty tongue and the occasional eye-roll. #reallife

This week you started Behind the Wheel, which means I need to start handing you the keys when we go out. Ack!

You hit the gym several days a week and are constantly making healthy food choices. You love to make smoothies, acai bowls, and salads.

You spend a ridiculous amount of time to get ready in the morning and are a wee bit high maintenance, and I am NOT looking forward to that 5:30 am alarm starting up again in a few weeks.

You’re topping out at six feet tall (!!), and still have a year or two more of growing. It’s so weird to have to look UP when I’m talking to you.

This year, you really went out of your comfort zone and tried out for cheer and made the high school team. I’m not looking forward to what our Fall schedule is going to look like between your cheer and your sister’s competition cheer, but you guys are happy and active and that’s what matters. Who needs sleep?

You have a solid group of friends and a social life that rivals mine.

We’ve started talking about colleges, and trying to figure out what direction you will be looking in, and although it’s sort of expected as a Junior in high school, this is just another step I’m not quite ready to take.

I love being your mom, and spending my days with you and your sister, and am so proud of the young man you are becoming and the choices you make.

Happy 16th, Nick!

Love, Mom

LIKES: friends, cheer, lazy pajama days, Playa Bowls, traveling, carnitas, Sloppy Joes, chocolate croissants

DISLIKES: chores, tech-free days, watching tv, messy spaces, spontaneity

Hey it’s me your Twitter friend. I stopped in to check out your Whole 30 recipes, but this post really grabbed my attention! Then I read every word and checked out the Look Back pictures. I love the way you express emotion in writing! I didn’t know you had been blogging for so long, that’s amazing and it says a lot about you as a person. Thanks for inviting me, I could become comfortable here. :-)
