I popped into @chocolatinenj early on Mother’s Day and was rewarded with this deliciousness. Layers of soft flaky croissant dough, tender smoked salmon, light whipped cream, thinly sliced red and green onion slivers and dotted with capers… it was every bit as amazing as you’d imagine it would be. If you’re local, don’t sleep on this one. 😋

I think of her often … every Mother’s Day because we spent most of them together since her husband worked weekends … when I discover a new food adventure (we once did a day long donut crawl) … when I’m sharing a special time with my kids knowing that her then-11 year old is growing up without her. A Crazy Bittersweet Day

October 5, 2005 · Narrative

It was the kinda day at work today that you fully expect to happen on a Monday. I guess the upside is it was a Tuesday, so we’re one day closer to the weekend. I ended up finally sneaking out at 3:30 to go grab lunch, and then after work, rushing to a doctor’s appointment with a doctor who wrote the appointment down for tomorrow. Ugh. Of course, it being rush-hour, it took me an hour to get home, instead of the usual 20 minutes. The boys went ahead and had dinner without me. With having lunch so late, it’s now nearly 9 o’clock and I’m still not hungry, so it looks like no dinner.

Was actually planning on taking the night off from blogging today, but the only reason I’m not is The Neighbor. Her Dad passed away very unexpectedly this morning, and I am at a complete loss of how to help her. She mentioned that she visited my site this afternoon for a distraction, and, of course, last night’s post happened to be a short one, so here I am, just in case she needs another distraction. In the meantime, Nicholas’ girlfriend is over and they are singing and dancing to Dora. At least she can hang out over here so The Neighbor can get some rest. Not being potty-trained yet, The Girlfriend has a stinky diaper, and The Husband has decided that it definitely must be true love between The Girlfriend and Nicholas, since he is oblivious to the smell. That said, you know what I’m doing next … because The Husband has mysteriously wandered downstairs to do “chores” all the sudden. And here I thought I was done with diaper changing for awhile…

Last week, Nicholas learned a phrase that he will undoubtedly use many times throughout his life … “Women!” When The Girlfriend comes over, we walk her home afterwards, since our houses are very close to each other. They always kiss and hug when we reach her house, but the other night, The Girlfriend was having none of it. Poor Nicholas. He so desperately wanted their snuggly routine, but it wasn’t until after she walked into her backyard that she relented and came out for a hug. Then she walked back into the yard, relented again and came out for her goodnight kiss. All was right with the world, or at least with the preschool set. As we’re walking down the path that separates our houses, they yell out “I love you, Nick!” and “I love you too!” to each other and Nicholas mutters “Women!” with the exact inntonation he’d need for such a phrase. Too cute.

Tomorrow The Husband cooks, so you’ll have to tune in for that. In the meantime, I’m leaving you with an as-yet-unpublished picture of the lovebirds. This was the very first dinner they had here together, and you can tell they enjoyed a chocolatey delight for dessert. Chocolate up to the eyebrows! Until tomorrow …

I’m sorry about your neighbor. That was really sweet of you to post something in case she needed something to read. I don’t have any tragedies to report but apparently I’m needing stuff to read tonight too :)

A very adorable photo of Nick and the GF. You are a great neighbor. There is nothing someone can do to make you feel better at a time like that. The only thing that even remotely helps is to know that people care about you, and you did that for her. You’re a good woman.

How sad for your neighbor – I’m glad she has you. LOVE the picture of the two in love! And that salad from yesterday sounds incredible.

The kids are too cute for words. Very thoughtful of you to think of your neighbor, despite the long day you had. It’s the little gestures that sometimes help at times when we don’t know what else to do.

A couple of my co-workers have had family members die over the last three years. They’ve always commented on the need to use our workplace to help keep them occupied, and to help them keep a rhythm about their life in crazy times. I’m glad your neighbor mentioned how helpful your blog is.
