I popped into @chocolatinenj early on Mother’s Day and was rewarded with this deliciousness. Layers of soft flaky croissant dough, tender smoked salmon, light whipped cream, thinly sliced red and green onion slivers and dotted with capers… it was every bit as amazing as you’d imagine it would be. If you’re local, don’t sleep on this one. 😋

I think of her often … every Mother’s Day because we spent most of them together since her husband worked weekends … when I discover a new food adventure (we once did a day long donut crawl) … when I’m sharing a special time with my kids knowing that her then-11 year old is growing up without her. First Day of Kindergarten

September 6, 2007 · Narrative

Nicholas has very definite opinions about certain things, clothes being one of them. No buttons. No collars. No stripes. That’s his common mantra and he’ll gladly tell anyone who will listen. So today not only being the first day of Kindergarten, but the first day of wearing his uniform, we had some challenges to overcome. First, there was that stinkin’ alarm clock. He definitely wasn’t thrilled to be getting up so early. Then the uniform, encompassing two of his dreaded aspects – buttons and collars. The horror. I explained that I wore a uniform all throughout school, and The Husband did for a few years as well. He didn’t really have a problem with the uniform per se, after all, he’s had a few days to get used to the idea. It was more so the early morning reality of the whole thing … the alarm clock, the uniform, the routine of going to school, and the scary prospect of a new school to boot. But he was quite the champ, I’ve got to say. He looked so handsome, and suddenly so much older, in his uniform. I can’t believe that he’s in Kindergarten already! As soon as we reached the front door of the school, the Principal was there greeting arriving kids by name. We turned the corner and walked down the long hallway to his new classroom, and saw a sea of kids already sitting there. Ok, we might have been a few minutes late. Shhhh. We walked into the classroom and instantly heard, “Nicholas! Nicholas! I know Nicholas from soccer!” The blonde-haired blue-eyed girl was excited to see a familiar face. I scanned the room for Nicholas’ desk and started leading the way. Sitting behind him was a classmate from his Pre-K class and soccer team. Diagonally in front of him, another Pre-K classmate. Nicholas turned and started chatting with his friends and barely gave me a second glance. I had to even ask him for a kiss.

I couldn’t wait to hear about his day when I picked him up from school. As he climbed in and got settled, I asked. “So tell me all about your day. What did you do?” “I don’t know, I forgot.” Nice.

Deep Sleep on the Last Day of Freedom

The cats actually came to the window,
wondering where Nicholas was going so early in the morning.
A sweet treat at the end of the school day.

Yeah, some parents tell me that they ask their kid “What did you learn in school today?” and the kid always says “Nothing.”

Hard to believe he’s in kindergarten!

Kalyn – every day, it’s the same thing. “What did you do today?” “I forgot!” He did, however, give my mom a whole recap – go figure. :)

The Neighbor Husband – enough so that on Tuesday we had to go to the pet store to get the dog its very own collar! I managed to convince him that he didn’t need a leash too. :) His godfather gave it to him when he was born. :)

I think that’s the universal answer to what did you do in school today. The only way I get information out of my kids is by asking specific questions.

Hope Nicholas has a great year!

Welcome to my world Cate! Except the uniform part.

I have one in Senior K and one in grade 3, and learn more about what they did in school from their friends than I do from them!

    Good luck Nicholas!
