Bribery and Etsy

so pretty

I never noticed her cheekbones until these pictures.  Now they just melt me every time I look at them.  I’ve been trying to grow out Madeline‘s bangs lately, to see if that helps tame her wild locks just a bit.  All that is fine and good, but she hates barrettes.  Well, she actually doesn’t hate them, she just refuses to wear them.

When I put them in, I usually try and distract her so she forgets that they’re there.

Sometimes a bribe works.

Once she realizes she has something in her hair (even a handband or a ponytail holder yields the same results), she pulls it out and hands it to me. Uh oh, the jig is up.

See the pretty barrette?

My Dad always asks, “Can’t you put a barrette or something in her hair?”  Um, yeah, tried that.  Hair Accessory: FAIL.  She looks so cute with them in, banishing the street urchin look completely, that I’m hoping this is just a phase that she outgrows.  A couple people have told me that their daughters did the same thing, but eventually turned the corner.  Here’s hoping.

Until then, I pick up the trail of pretty barrettes and hair clips left around the house.  Sometimes we lose them.  A brand new, particularly adorable strawberry clip is floating around my parents’ house from the Halloween party this past weekend.

Now if you happen to have a little girl who likes hair accessories, behold the wonderful craftsmanship of Etsy.  With the holidays coming, it’s a great place to pick up something unique and homemade, all the while supporting a local artisan.

Are you a regular at Etsy?  Who are your favorite sellers?  Would love to find some new favorites to add to my list.  Some of mine are:

Skylar’s Candy Clips for hair accessories
Made By Girl – love their alphabet prints
The Vintage Pearl – handstamped jewelry; I have a chain with Nicholas and Madeline pendants on it, along with their birthstones – love it
Trinity’s Tutus – the tutu for Madeline’s first birthday came from here – wonderfully easy seller to work with, especially for custom orders
Superfly Kidz
– superhero capes.  Both kids have their own, as well as my niece, Sophie – love them!
Sugar & Spice – adorable hair accessories
The Jump Off – one-of-a-kind t-shirt dresses for your little one made from concert t-shirts.  Have a favorite concert tee of your own?  She’ll turn it into a dress for your daughter – love that!
SFGirlbyBay – love the Keep Calm and Carry On print, and have the aqua one ready to hang in the master bath

Fun links!! Thanks! I, too, have a gorgeous necklace from The Vintage Pearl. My daughter has super fine long hair, so I always need something to pull it back (and rarely does anything work). Love the headbands in Skylar’s Candy Clips!

Your daughter is adorable! My mom tells me I went through a phase where I refused to wear anything in my hair. Then I went through another phase where I would only wear it in a ponytail. Someday she’ll find a happy medium! I adore Etsy.

I’m pretty sure my little sister spent ages 0-5 pulling things out of her hair. Clips, headbands, etc. And she did grow out of it. Now she is 13 and spends about an hour on her hair every day. She will grow out of it. And maybe if Maddie does the street urchin thing now, she’ll get it out of her system and won’t want to do the ripped jeans/holey shirts thing when she’s older!

My friend just had this same conversation with me about her daughter. I guess it is a common problem.

Oreos are good tool in bribery!

Too cute! My favorite etsy shop is Fleur de Lis catering, her baked goods are made the day they are shipped. I had a special order of fantastic Red Velvet cupcakes! http://www.etsy.com/shop.php?user_id=6622307

I plan on staying as far away from etsy as possible. It would be very dangerous for me. There are cookbooks there!

She is cute with the barretts. Maybe she’ll grow out of taking them loose.

Oh boy, do I love Etsy! I sell my crocheted items there, too, so I don’t feel quite so guilty buying stuff constantly! On their birthdays this year, almost all of my friends and family received something handmade that I ordered through the site. It’s just way too fun!

Madeline does look adorable with her barrette! I hated stuff in my hair as a kid, too. Now my hair is so thick and curly that I can barely get anything in there without it looking like an egg in a bird’s nest… so I still avoid it at all costs :)

I completely understand the hair barrette thing – all my girls have been that way – drives me nuts! I get quite offended – it is my RIGHT as a mother of girls to put things in their hair – big foolish things even. Hmph. the whole subject makes me grumpy!

Anyway, Your site looks gorgeous and your photography is absolutely AMAZING! I wish I had that talent (&camera)! lol
