Recipe: Falafel Spiced Turkey Burgers {Whole30}

February 18, 2020 · Narrative, Whole30

Those hints of falafel seasoning mixed with ground turkey serves up one delicious bite after another – let’s make Falafel Spiced Turkey Burgers!

Turkey Falafel Burger

I love falafel, and its seasoning, so when I saw Molly Yeh make these Falafel-Spiced Turkey Burgers on a recent episode of Girl Meets Farm on Food Network, I made a mental note to go look up the recipe. There was only one problem … I was doing a round of Whole30, and her recipe wasn’t completely Whole30-compliant. A couple small tweaks and changes and here we are … a crazy delicious Turkey Burger recipe that is packed with flavor and kid-approved! My oldest loved them, and some mornings, I even crumbled a few pieces into my scrambled eggs. So freaking good, guilt-free, quick, and healthy. I loved them so much I actually made the recipe four times over the course of ten days! Winner, winner, turkey dinner!

Recipe: Falafel Waffles (#putaneggonit)

July 21, 2015 · Narrative

Waffle makers are made for so much more than just plain waffles. How about a Falafel Waffle? Crispy and savory, and oh so good with a runny egg on top.

Untitled

Continuing the trend of using my waffle maker for making everything but normal waffles, next up was a batch of Falafel Waffles. I’ve seen a few iterations of these and since one of our favorite local falafel places closed up shop a year or two ago, I’m always on the hunt for delicious falafel.

Even better when they come from my own kitchen.

And what I’m finding out from cooking more and more with my waffle maker?

That you can put pretty much anything in it and you can’t go wrong.

Mix up the batter, pour it in, and let the waffle maker do its thing.

Perfect for a quick beat-the-heat meal when you just can’t bear to turn on your oven.

Using many of the ingredients that are typically found in more traditional waffles, you can feel slightly better about eating these because they’re not fried (like their more common counterparts).

So win/win.

You can get all sorts of creative with toppings for falafel waffles, and certainly go the more typical route of hummus or tahini dressing, tomatoes, lettuce, and what have you, but I had an avocado begging to be used and then I thought … a runny egg. Of course.

I was making something else for the kids (an abbreviated version without the falafel waffle) when Nick wandered into the kitchen.

“What smells so amazing?”

Falafel waffles, wanna try?

I didn’t think he would, but he did, and then proceeded to eat an entire one.

Coming from a kid that won’t try a regular falafel, this is high praise indeed.

Let’s dig in.

Hungry for more “out of the box” waffle ideas?
Rainbow waffles make a fun dinner or a perfect sleepover breakfast. And heck, they’re just pretty to look at.
Pizza Waffles were a crowd pleaser, and got a huge thumbs up from the kids. No surprise there.
And for a unique breakfast alternative, give these Bacon, Egg, and Spinach Waffles a try.

Review: Ephesus Restaurant

May 21, 2012 · Narrative

It’s no secret that I’m a fan of Middle Eastern food.

See Exhibit A.

And Exhibit B.

Exhibit C.

Amongst other, not-yet-documented moments.

So when my friend Beth and I needed a quick snack to fuel us during a recent Saturday of errands, we went by way of falafel.

A quick duck into a semi-new Middle Eastern restaurant gave us the opportunity to check out their menu, and power up to … power on.   (Although to be completely accurate, this restaurant is designated as Turkish Mediterranean)

restaurant - interior

A non-descript restaurant in a blink-and-you-miss-it strip mall, Ephesus is about seven months old (new owners, new menu, taken over from the previous Bosphorous), and our takeaway on the place can be summed up in two sentences.

The chef needs to find the salt shaker.

Review: Mamoun’s Restaurant, Hoboken, NJ

April 11, 2011 · Narrative, Restaurant Review

Reality has a way of quickly biting you in the arse sometimes, doesn’t it? A quiet but swift reminder that it still very much exists. Last week was Spring Break. For Nick. For me. Not so much Madeline, because her life is like a never-ending Spring Break. We all had a great time. I came back replenished, very clear-headed about a lot of things, and ready to conquer the world. Well, small parts of it that are mine anyway. But I also came home to a house with no power.

Power has since been restored, but unfortunately a messy wrath was left behind. So far, no computer, phones, tv, printer, and, unfortunately, the list is growing, including a fridge that I sadly had to empty.

Luckily I had a few posts that I wrote before I left, so I was able to quickly post this at lunch time today, but unfortunately no new pictures until everything is righted in the O’Malley household. Until then, bear with me.

Mamouns

I love Middle Eastern food.  Falafel.  Tabbouleh.  Hummus.  All of it.  So when a new Middle Eastern restaurant opened up in Hoboken, I couldn’t wait to try it.  Although new to Hoboken, Mamoun’s is not new.  They have a location in Greenwich Village in New York City, a falafel restaurant that first opened up its doors in 1971, and the oldest falafel restaurant in New York.  They also have a second location in NYC (on St. Mark’s) and another one in New Haven, CT.  If you’re lucky enough to be near one of their restaurants, do grab a bite.  You won’t be sorry.

Our dinner was take-out, and when we got back, we had an assortment of little foil-wrapped mystery packages to sift through.

Mystery Packages

It took me forever to decide what to order. It all sounded so good. And truth be told, the prices are so inexpensive, you could order half the menu and still not break the bank. I went with their falafel veggie sandwich combo. It has chopped fresh vegetables, falafel and their special sauce. I had no idea what some of the ingredients were, but it was so good, it didn’t matter.
