Recipe: M&M Cookie Pie

November 11, 2015 · Narrative, Sweets

When you’re looking for a simple dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth, this M&M Cookie Pie is perfect (especially if you have leftover Halloween candy!).

Untitled

Do you happen to be staring at an overflowing bag of Halloween candy too?

Raise your hand if you can relate.

Even though the kids donated a record TWELVE POUNDS of candy to the Halloween Candy Buy Back program, we still have a rather large Target-sized bag of “favorites” in our home.

Which is dangerous.

Mostly for me.

So when the kids aren’t looking, I sneak a few packages of candy into a new recipe.

Not that they mind, of course, when they get rewarded with something like this M&M Cookie Pie.

It’s quick enough that you can easily make it after dinner (only dirtying one bowl!), and with the colorful M&Ms popping through, it’s a sure-fire winner. If you happen to be looking for something a bit more demure, you can replace the M&Ms with chocolate chunks – use up those Hershey bars! I personally love the chew that the additional of oats gives this pie, and the addition of oatmeal practically makes it healthy, right??

And if you really want to gild the lily, serve it warm with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream and a drizzle of chocolate syrup over the top.

Divine.

Recipe: Loaded M&M Cookie Bars

November 12, 2013 · Narrative

Leftover Halloween candy gets put to good use in these Loaded M&M Cookie Bars.

Loaded M&M Oreo Bars

We donated a large amount of our Halloween candy, and I’ve been working on being creative with what we have left ever since.

You know, so we don’t eat.it.all.

Last week, I made a cookie that was stuffed with Butterfingers, Kit-Kats, and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Although I didn’t have any myself, I’d have to say that given the speed in which they disappeared, they were a hit.

Big time.

Today’s recipe used up the four small packages of Oreo cookies that were in the Halloween stash, along with many, many packages of the M&M’s.

The rest of the M&M’s, keeping the peanut ones separate, I emptied into sealed containers and popped them into the baking cabinet for future baking pursuits.

Loaded M&M Oreo Bars - Close Up-001

Using a blondie bar recipe as the base, roughly chopped Oreos are mixed in, and then once the batter is in the pan, ready for baking, M&M’s are sprinkled on top.

I love that the recipe is for an 8×8 dish, the perfect size to save a few bars for the kids and share a few with some friends. I also love that no mixer is needed and it’s all in one bowl. Recipes like that totally get made more often because I’m all over anything that keeps my kitchen becoming less of a disaster. Mostly because I feel like I’m always fighting the good fight to keep up with dishes.

Even with a dishwasher.

Less than thirty minutes from start to mouth, the kids declared this one a keeper. Good texture, a slight crispy bite from the Oreos, and little bits of chocolatey goodness sprinkled in with the M&M’s.

If YOU have leftover Halloween stash you want to put to good use, or odds and ends in your cupboards, get to baking!

Tomorrow? A Baltimore restaurant review.

15-Minute Lentil Soup

February 16, 2010 · Narrative

Lentil Soup

When I found out that Jamie liked lentils, I became just a little excited. I can’t lie.   I am a big lentil fan, but know very few people that are. It was the perfect opportunity to try a new Martha Stewart recipe for 15-Minute Lentil Soup. And since Jamie jokingly complains that she has gained, ahem, a few pounds since she started coming here a little over a year ago, I felt it only right to offset the cookies and other sweet treats with something hearty and healthy. It’s fair.

This recipe came from Martha’s Everyday Food magazine. Between this and the meatloaf yesterday, it’s quickly turning into Martha’s week here. Each serving has 281 calories, 5.7 grams of fat, over 19 grams of protein and 16.8 grams of fiber. It’s definitely soup you can feel good about eating, and given the fact that Winter seems like it’s never going to leave us (seriously, snow again today?!), it will do right by you and warm you from the inside out.  It’s crazysimple to make and a guilt-free but tasty way to start off a dinner or be a nice, light lunch.

After Dinner Nibbles

Had company for dinner last night, and our guests brought a bunch of different desserts, including a jar full of pink M&Ms. Don’t you just love friends like that? Thank goodness these were the milk chocolate version.  My weakness is for the peanut butter ones.  If it had been those, I would surely have been in trouble.  Big time.
