Layers of soft flaky croissant dough, tender smoked salmon, light whipped cream, thinly sliced red and green onion slivers and dotted with capers… it was every bit as amazing as you’d imagine it would be. If you’re local, don’t sleep on this one. 😋

Recipe: Sour Cream Waffles

March 15, 2016 · Breakfast, Narrative

Waffles so tender and delicious, they’ll make a convert out of the most ardent waffle-hater…

Untitled

As much as we use our waffle maker (this one!), I really don’t like waffles.

But you know how that story goes.

You don’t like something, until you have it a particular way, or with a particular recipe, and all of the sudden, everything has changed.

This is that.

Breakfast for dinner is probably a weekly occurrence in our house.

Because it’s easy, everyone loves it, and I can play Short Order Cook and make everyone their (different) favorites, but still be done within half an hour.

Which is pretty perfect for the average weeknight in our household.

Because between homework, showers, and extra-curricular activities, who needs a meal that takes forever to make?

Definitely not me.

So… I’m always looking for new recipes for waffles, whether sweet or savory, to continue to keep it interesting.

And I stumbled on a recipe for Sour Cream Waffles.

Checked the fridge. Have all the ingredients. It’s a done deal.

Like any basic waffle recipe, the batter mixes up in nothing flat, and bonus points for using basic ingredients that you likely have on hand already.

For some reason, likely starvation, I snuck a bite of the first waffle that came off the press.

And then I finished it.

Because it was THAT GOOD.

No butter or syrup needed (although my kids might disagree).

So tender. With a slightly crispy outside and a soft bite inside.

THIS recipe has converted me to liking waffles.

Whether you eat it hot off the waffle iron in all of its naked glory, or you add your favorite toppings … you can’t go wrong with this one.

EAT UP.

Hungry for more waffle recipes? I’ve got you.
Falafel waffles are a unique savory twist … and delish when topped with a soft avocado and a runny egg.
Rainbow waffles make a fun dinner or a perfect sleepover breakfast. And heck, they’re just pretty to look at.
Pizza Waffles were a crowd pleaser, and got a huge thumbs up from the kids. No surprise there.
And for a unique breakfast alternative, give these Bacon, Egg, and Spinach Wafflesa try.

Recipe: Pizza Waffles

May 28, 2015 · Narrative

Your waffle maker is ready to make so much more than just waffles. How about we try Pizza Waffles?

Untitled

It took me nearly forty-five years to buy a waffle maker, but never let it be said that I bought it to make waffles.

At some point, I’m sure I will be all traditional with it and make a batch or three of waffles, mostly for Madeline because I don’t eat them and Nick rarely does.

But in the meantime?

How about we continue some out-of-the-box thinking and make Pizza Waffles instead?

This inspiration came on a recent Friday night when I found myself with a house full of unexpected kid visitors.

Who were hungry.

Normally my go-to in situations like that would be a big platter of spaghetti, because it’s an easy crowd-pleaser, and I always have the ingredients on hand. But I had a little bit of extra time, so I decided to get a little creative instead.

And Pizza Waffles were born.

Because next to spaghetti, pizza is equally popular amongst the kid-set.

No official recipe, but that just means this “guideline” is ultra-forgiving and dummy-proof.

Which is pretty much my favorite kind of recipe.

In less than five minutes, I had seven kids served and coming back for seconds.

The waffle maker makes them deliciously crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.

Clean up is a breeze, you use mostly ingredients that you have on hand, and you can customize these tasty little bites to cater to your crew’s varying taste buds.

What more could you want?

Hungry for more waffle ideas?
These Bacon, Egg, and Spinach Waffles are another delicious alternative.

Do You Bonte?

March 22, 2009 · Narrative

Waffle
I subscribe to a few e-mail newsletters that highlight things to do, places to see, events and such in and around New Jersey.  They’re great sources to discover new restaurants or find something to do with your family on an unexpected free weekend.  A recent newsletter highlighted Bonte, a new restaurant that opened up in Morristown recently.  Known primarily for their waffles and crepes, given that we’ve been partial to waffles and crepes lately, it seemed the perfect new spot for us to check out.

As I learned on our visit, Bonte is actually a franchise restaurant.  The owners of the Morristown location only own that one (so far), but there is another location in South Orange, among a few in Philadelphia and other spots.  The waffles are made fresh to order, replicating the sugar waffles that are popular in Brussels.  To continue their authenticity, they even import many ingredients weekly from overseas.  Since we have never been to Bonte before, we stared at the menuboard blankly for a few minutes, trying to figure out what to order.  Luckily there was no line behind us, and the woman taking orders was able to make a few suggestions.

Because it was lunchtime, I ordered their Poulot Gruyere sandwich to split with the kids for lunch, and because this place was known for their waffles, I ordered one plain waffle and one with ice cream and fudge topping for dessert.  If we’re going to go for it, we might as well go for it, right?  When ordering the waffles, there are lots of mix-ins that you can get to personalize your waffle.  They mix your chosen item right in with the batter, for little bits of surprises with every bite.
