Odds and Ends

July 25, 2006 · Narrative

It’s h-o-t outside, let’s talk ice cream. Namely, Breyers ice cream. They have released two brand spankin’ new flavors, Fried Ice Cream and Bubble Yum. Hello, Breyers!

First off, the Fried Ice Cream. Fried Ice Cream just happens to be one of my favorite Mexican desserts. Can you say yum-o? I make a Mock Fried Ice Cream at home that tastes close enough to the real thing to satisfy a craving. Now back to Breyers new version … “Cinnamon caramel light ice cream swirled with honey caramel with cinnamon tostada pieces.” It’s a Special Edition, which means its time on the shelf might be limited. I had a small sample of it tonight, with a little bit of honey drizzled over it, and it’s quite tasty. Though I gotta say, my own Mock Fried Ice Cream (still using Breyers product actually) is better.

Now their second new flavor, Bubble Yum. One of the fun perks of Summer is that Baskin Robbins rolls out their Bubble Gum ice cream. You can hardly make it halfway through a cone before having a wad of gum in your mouth so large that you can’t chew it anymore. Love that stuff. I haven’t tried Breyers version yet … one at a time, folks.

Up next – Tivo Alert. Alton Brown fans will be excited to know that his new show, Feasting on Asphalt, premieres this Saturday. Alton will be going crisscrossing the country to find America’s best road food, all on his motorcycle. Should be a fun one.

Lastly, check out my short piece here on Wine Sediments about new pink wines you just might need to add to your collection. I picked up a few of them this past weekend, so liquid research will be forthcoming.
All for tonight folks. Until tomorrow…

Movie Update: We’ve been catching up a bit on movies recently: Flight Plan (I will never fall asleep on a plane again, good movie), Failure to Launch (cute, strikingly similar to How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio (based on a true story, a little poignantly sad) and Elizabethtown (ok).

A year ago today … magazine haul.

I’m not big on having ice cream, but I’ve never had fried ice cream and this may be the way to test it out! Haven’t seen Flight Plan but want to. I may just run out and get this to watch this week.

Ali – definitely a good movie; I just felt bad for her; good thing she was a happy person through and through. ;)

Claire – it’s a really good movie starring Jodie Foster.

    Sara – delish!

Pamela – Because it has crunchy bits in it. The one that’s in Mexican restaurants is usually a scoop of vanilla ice cream rolled in crushed cornflakes (or something similar) and actually dropped in the fryer for a couple seconds to crisp it up. So, so good. Usually served on a toasted tortilla that has been dusted with cinnamon, and then the whole thing is topped with honey and whipped cream. Can’t go wrong with that!

Catherine – off to go look. ;)

    The Husband (neighbor)

I want to try both but the fried sounds better. I am having a hard time with the thought of bubble gum ice cream. I love bubble gum water ice so who knows. My heart will always belong to Carmel Cone:)

Mmmmm. Ice cream…. Rachael Ray has a mock fried ice cream recipe that was a hit in our house (before South Beach): http://www.foodnetwork.com/food/recipes/recipe/0,,FOOD_9936_28324,00.html

Wheresmymind – Poprocks ice cream? Really? Haven’t seen that one yet. I loved pop rocks!

Jean – like the sugar in the ice cream isn’t enough, right? It’s actually not as bad as you’d think — always makes me think of Summer. :)

The Neighbor Husband – I’ll share mine with you, since The Husband isn’t going to go near it. Mmmm, Bubblegum Italian Ices …

Madeline – looks like Ray Ray and I were on the same wavelength. I don’t know about the cinnamon on top. I’m kinda funny about cinnamon if it’s not baked in something. ;)

I had fried ice cream at a Mexican restaurant many moons ago, and as weird as I thought it sounded, it was great.
The bubble gum ice cream will apeal to the kids. When I was little, I had it at a neighborhood ice cream shop that makes tons of flavors from scratch. I liked it then, but probably would’nt now.
