She was born in Paris and we’ve grown up with a healthy appreciation for French things … starting with their pastries and baguettes, but so much more. My daughter took her first trip to Paris last year and thoroughly enjoyed the croissants there and she deemed the ones at @chocolatinenj just as perfect. No surprise there since the owner is a French pastry chef! If you’re local and haven’t been, do make a point to stop in and visit. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday and have a wide selection of sweet and savory items and a few French retail selections as well. We’ve tried the macarons, the Croque Monsieur, the croissants, the tomato tarts, the baguette … basically we’re working our way through their display case in due time. Don’t miss this one - enjoy!

Cookbook Addicts Beware!

August 24, 2006 · Narrative

The holidays are coming and that means two very important things. Well, ok, it probably means lots more than two things, but for now, let’s focus.

1. All the special holiday-themed cooking magazines will soon be released. And more importantly …

2. New cookbooks are coming!

Are they ever! I happened to place an order at Amazon the other day and caught a glimpse of what is about to be unleashed on the weak-willed.

First up, Ina Garten (otherwise known as the Barefoot Contessa) is starting us off with her newest book, Barefoot Contessa at Home: Everyday Recipes You’ll Make Over and Over Again.

Next up is the second offering from Dave Lieberman, with Dave’s Dinners: A Fresh Approach to Home-Cooked Meals.

The Southern Queen rises again with her new cookbook, Paula Deen Celebrates!: Best Dishes and Best Wishes for the Best Times of Your Life . Now there’s a mouthful! Taking cues from various occasions, she offers plenty of menu ideas and southern comfort recipes.

Next up, and this should come as no surprise given how prolific she’s been so far, Rachael Ray is not only coming out with two new cookbooks, she’s also rereleasing one of her very first cookbooks, which has been, until now, out of print. Her first new offering is Rachael Ray 2, 4, 6, 8: 30-Minute Meals for Couples or Crowds. The second is Classic 30-Minute Meals: The All-Occasion Cookbook. She is rereleasing her popular Open House Cookbook: Over 200 Recipes for Easy Entertaining. If you missed this one the first time it came out, this is your chance to add it to your Rachael Ray collection.

He who reigns in Napa Valley has come out with an interesting twist for his 3rd cookbook with Michael Chiarello’s Flavored Oils and Vinegars: 100 Recipes for Cooking with Infused Oils and Vinegars. Just a warning on this one … with this quote from Amazon, “Combining two classic books (over 250,000 sold!), with an enticing new design and cover, Michael Chiarello’s Flavored Oils and Vinegars is a sure-fire crowd pleaser,” it appears some of the content might be from his previous two books.

The host of Food TV Network’s Food 911 and other shows, Tyler Florence brings his devotion to fresh ingredients to another level with his newest cookbook, Tyler’s Ultimate: Brilliant Simple Food to Make Any Time .

The “science guy” from Food TV Network, Alton Brown, is out with I’m Just Here for the Food: Version 2.0. Not all entirely new material, this cookbook does have “10 brand-new recipes, 20 pages of additional material, a jacket that folds out into a poster, and a removable refrigerator magnetÂ?along with everything that made the original a classic instruction manual for the kitchen.”

The Neighbor Husband will be pleased as punch to find out that his girl, Sandra Lee, has been busy on new (cough, cough) cookbooks (FIVE of them!). Outdoing the clock in Rachael Ray’s kitchen, first up, she delivers Semi-Homemade 20-Minute Meals , followed by Semi-Homemade Slow Cooker Recipes, Semi-Homemade Light Cooking, Semi-Homemade: Great Gatherings and Semi-Homemade: Cooking with Kids.

Although not entirely food-related, I can’t help but include (and be excited about) Martha Stewart coming back to the bookstore with Martha Stewart’s Homekeeping Handbook: The Essential Guide to Caring for Everything in Your Home. It’s high time for her to release a cookbook, but I’ll take this in the meantime.

Although not headlined by a Food TV Network celebrity chef, I’m just as excited about the release of Crazy about Cupcakes — love them cupcakes!

OK, that should do it for now. Most of the above come out in October and November, although you can pre-order them all now (I fell to the temptation of a few already myself). Until tomorrow…

A year ago today … no cooking and a new book.

Only the Barefoot Contessa is enticing me on this list. Fortunately, our library seems to pick up most of the books from the Food Network personalities so hopefully I can sample many of these books for free.

Cool, what a great roundup. I’ll definitely be checking some of those out. It’s no surprise about Rachael Ray, I keep wondering how she or her groupies can keep up the pace with which she delivers these new cookbooks.

Thanks for the info, very useful for those of us who read cookbooks like regular books, LOL!
