The neon multicolored lights strewn across the ceiling from end to end. The bright silver spinning disco ball in the center of the room. The pulsing beat of 80s music from the loudspeaker. Yes, my friends, the Sweetnicks crew went rollerskating. Yesterday, we and The Neighbors braved putting our bodies on 8 wheels, something some of us hadn’t done in 20+ years. Brave indeed.
Nicholas loves ice skating, having gone for the first time on our cruise back in October. We tried inline skating with him, also on the cruise, but he wasn’t a big fan. A few months ago, I bought him a pair of roller skates that he has become quite enthralled with, tromping through the house with one skate on at various intervals – the better to learn balancing, you see. This was the first time at an actual roller rink though. It definitely spooked him a bit, with the kids whizzing by, then them being instantly flattened on a quick turn, but he’s game for going again.
It’s like riding a bicycle really, you just don’t forget how to do it, lucky thing that is. The first round I was a bit wobbly and definitely kept close to the wall, just in case. With me and The Husband holding each of Nicholas’ hands, if one falls, we all fall. After about an hour and a half, we were ready to stop. On the side of the rink, they have these columns in the entry ways, where people are going in and out, and never being one to do things completely by the book, I aim for the columns and grab on, stopping very easily. For me, it’s more fun that way. Or so it was.
The last spin, Nicholas and my stepdaughter were sitting that one out, so The Husband and I were going zipping around quite fast. I let go of The Husband’s hand, aiming for the columns to go sit with Nicholas a bit. I grabbed onto the column, as usual and then whump! Landed flat on my arse. Certainly gave the ‘tween set something to laugh about I’m sure. The Husband, merrily skating around the rink, completely unaware that his wife had crashed. By the time he came around the bend again, my hands were peeking over the ledge, in an effort to pull myself up, but I was laughing too hard to do it justice. Ouch.
The Neighbor Husband gave me quite a chuckle. He was sitting nearby when it happened and said, “I was watching this kid come off the track really fast and then wipe out. I looked to see if she was ok, and then she turned around and it was you!” I look younger than my age, but not sure I qualify as a kid, but, hey, I’ll take it!
All in all, much fun for everyone, and the kids were fast asleep nearly as soon as we pulled out of the parking lot.
For dinner last night, we continued the fun and planned a Mexican-themed dinner. Mexican Bean and Cheese Pockets, Nachos Grands and Mexican Lasagna all hit the table, along with Lime Margaritas and the requisite chips and guacamole. Ole! Good eating all around (recipes to follow tomorrow).
We finished the evening catching up on a few movies, watching Coach Carter and then Material Girls. Coach Carter was good, way better than Invincible and Miami Vice of last weekend, but so far, nothing beats Remember the Titans as a sports movie (and it’s on tap for next weekend).
Until tomorrow…

SO much fun…I haven’t been skating in ages. I could skate but nothing special. My brother, however, was a whiz. He actually won limbo many times…yes, limbo on roller skates! Glad y’all had fun. Have you seen Miracle about the US 1980 hockey team. That is a good sports movie, too.
