Last week, Nicholas was getting ready for school and as I put his stuff in his backpack, he exclaimed, “Mama, not THAT backpack. I’m not using THAT backpack anymore.””No? Why not?”
“‘Cause that’s not the kind that cool kids use,” said with full eye roll, thankyouverymuch. “Cool kids use the kind like my other backpack,” as he raced upstairs to find it.
For thems not in the know, the “other” backpack, which has now been deemed cooler than cool, has wheels and a pull-up handle. ‘Tis NOT the kind that you just sling on your back. Who knew?
We pulled up in front of the school and he jumped out of the car and handed me his backpack.
“You can’t carry it?”
“No, Mama, it’s too heavy. You can.”
Now far be it from me to argue with a “cool kid,” but exactly how cool is it when your mother is behind you dragging your backpack?
That’s ironic because when I was in high school, only about 3 or so years ago, the book bags with the wheels and handles weren’t seen as cool. How things progress!
Explorations in Life
My 10yo son insisted on a backpack with wheels this year. A few months later, we both hate it. It’s a pain to get in and out of the car and it’s completely torn apart. I’m hopefully this teaches him to question what’s cool…
That’s the cutest story! I can see why the ones with wheels would be better for kids. Health studies have shown how the traditional over the shoulder backpacks were causing back problems in kids because they were too heavy. Tell Nick, good on ya! Wheel away dude!
That’s so funny. This is a post you can show him years from now and still laugh. By the way, The Girlfriend woke up today at 7:30am and wanted to call Nicholas. It was hard to get her not to call him. lol So cute, they miss each other.
erelliot – yeah, I would have thought the other ones were cooler too, but apparently I’m now too old to know. ;)
Tracy – Luckily we still have the other one so if it becomes cooler to have a backpack not in shreds, we’re all set. ;)
Barbara – And he was so serious about it!
The Neighbor (Wife, I’m assuming?) – good thing she didn’t call since his school had a delayed opening and he managed to sleep until 9 am. :) I’m sure they’ll make up for lost time this weekend. ;)
Nick you ROCK!
Tia aka The Sister In-law
LOLOL, that is too funny.
But now I realize I am beyond uncool–I didn’t even know backpacks now came with wheels! (Way back when I was a kid we would have called that ‘luggage.’ ; )
Thats so cute..:)
