I popped into @chocolatinenj early on Mother’s Day and was rewarded with this deliciousness. Layers of soft flaky croissant dough, tender smoked salmon, light whipped cream, thinly sliced red and green onion slivers and dotted with capers… it was every bit as amazing as you’d imagine it would be. If you’re local, don’t sleep on this one. 😋

Today would have been my friend Cathy’s 53rd bir Today would have been my friend Cathy’s 53rd birthday. Unfortunately she’s not here to celebrate because she died suddenly at age 49. I think of her often … every Mother’s Day because we spent most of them together since her husband worked weekends … when I discover a new food adventure (we once did a day long donut crawl) … when I’m sharing a special time with my kids knowing that her then-11 year old is growing up without her. Before she passed, I always appreciated every day, but since then, even more so. You never know what the next day can bring, so relish in the sunshine, surprise rainstorms, making wishes over railroad tracks and all the wonderful randomness life can throw your way. Don’t waste a single second, say yes, live on the outskirts of your comfort zone, laugh often, tell people you love them, give eight second hugs, and squeeze every ounce of joy you can out of life. Do it for the people who can’t. ✨

Superbowl Party Fun

February 4, 2008 · Narrative

Superbowl planning and food traditionally belongs to The Neighbors, and yesterday was no exception – I can’t hog all the holidays and fun, can I? We were aiming at keeping the food along the lines of the grazing type, perfect choices to hold us over for a few hours during the game.

I must have changed my mind ten times if I changed it once, while trying to decide what to bring. I ended up going with those sinfully delicious Bacon Cheese Appetizers we made awhile back (and they’re still just as good, producing happy moans all around), Shrimp Cocktail and Onion Fritattas (more on those later in the week). She made fresh guacamole and pigs in a blanket, and a sandwich platter and wings from Costco rounded out the feast. Perfect food to watch the game. And the game! Anyone who knows me knows that I just don’t have much interest in football. Show me the halftime entertainment, some good commercials and a lot of fun food, and I’m there, but I won’t be paying much attention to the actual game. Last night though, I actually watched the game, and even learned quite a bit. I was definitely the only one rooting 100% for the Giants (hello? hometown team?), and was glad that they won. The throw that Eli Manning managed to get off while untangling himself from the sack was a showstopper, only met by the fact that it was caught so well. How did David (thanks, Val!) manage to hang onto it with one hand on his helmet, while falling?

The commercials? Eh, I thought they were disappointing this year, with the Clydesdales and the dalmations being the only memorable exception. And the halftime show? Another snooze. We decided, so far, that Aerosmith from a few years ago was the best one. Until tomorrow…

I was so glad that the Giants won! Eli went to school in MS, so we were all rooting for him! That was quite a play. I was on the phone with a friend and her husband was yelling at her to watch the replay! Can’t wait to see the onion frittata!

Why is it that the simplest foods are sometimes the best? I love to roll up a hot dog in something bread-y! YUM!

Your feast sounds awesome Cate! Glad you had fun and your team won! By the way, David Tyree caught that awesome pass :-) HE should have been the MVP, IMO.

Glad the Giants won, but it’s making my commute to work a not so smoothe one. Only I would work downtown and live near the Stadium. Aye ya ya!!

It’s not that I didn’t want the Giants to win. It’s just I’m used to them disappointing us. And they always do it in the last couple minutes of the game. I’m glad they won.

Claire – I’m glad he did his alma mater proud. :)

Abbey – right? Pigs in a blanket are always a big hit. :)

Val – thanks for catching that.

The SIL – I’m sure today was even messier, but at least it’s for a good reason. :)

The Neighbors Wife – They just want to make sure you watch the WHOLE thing. ;)

Kristine – aren’t they? We forgot how good they were until we had them again … mmmmm.

I love pigs in a blanket (that is at least what my family always called it)! That brings me back to my childhood in Virginia:)
