Writing Here, There and Everywhere

by Cate on September 4, 2008

It is currently 11:51 pm as I’m writing this and my contact lenses are seriously glued to my eyeballs.  The Republican National Convention is over and Jay Leno is on making his jabs about the candidates.  My friend Sarah and I are sending instant messages back and forth, keeping each other away as we race to finish some freelancing deadlines … oh, that and tying up some loose ends to a new site we’re launching on Monday.  After I get this post published, I am heading to bed … and it will be the earliest I’ve been to bed in ages.

Sarah and I usually meet online weeknights around 9:30 or 10 pm, after all our kids are in bed.  We call it our “second shift,” those quiet late night hours when we are hard at work on freelancing projects.  Luckily with both of us pounding away at our respective keyboards and working a similar schedule, we’re able to spur each other on when toothpicks are the only things keeping our eyelids open … unless Sarah’s 9-month-old baby wakes up first (’cause, ahem, mine sleeps through the night ;)).  Then Sarah gets to work later than me – ha!

So since this is the first night I’m hitting the hay before 12:30 am, I’m not writing a bunch here.  Instead, a few links to send you trotting along somewhere else … at least for now.

– My latest post for the folks at MyRecipes is up, and you can check it out here.  Hello Pulled Pork!  So nice to meet you!  We should have been introduced a long time ago.  Now we have to catch up for lost time.  Scared off by the notion that making pulled pork is an all-day affair?  Don’t be.  Check out the recipe in my article and you’ll be a convert just like me.

– And my newest article for the 3-A-Day team can be found right here.  Introducing Blue Cheese Fondue.  I always want to spell it Bleu Cheese, but Sarah reminds me that’s not how we do it here.  What can I say … it must be my French mom’s influence.  Blue Cheese just looks so wrong to me.  Oh, but I digress.  Like bleu (couldn’t resist!) cheese?  Like fondue?  Then you might want to give the fondue a whirl.  The Husband wasn’t a fan, although I thought the accompanying hot-sauced chicken would have tempted him, but no matter … more for me!

– And lastly, nothing to read there yet, but a teensy bit of majorly exciting news.  Well, at least for me.  And if you’ve been hanging out here at Sweetnicks for awhile, maybe for you too … in support of me, you understand.  ;)  So you might have heard some news earlier in the summer that Hearst (you know, the folks that publish O magazine, Cosmo, Good Housekeeping, Marie Claire, Esquire and probably countless other magazines that pile up on your coffee table) and MSN have joined forces to launch a new food destination to end all food destinationswww.delish.com.  Go on and check it out, but come right back, because there’s nothing there yet to read, silly.  BUT there will be at the end of this month.  The new site will be quite fab and you will get lost in it.  At least I hope so.  And what does this have to do with anything, you may ask?  I’m going to be writing for it.  I am totally stoked.  I’ll be having a regular column over there chatting about … well … food.  No surprise there.  I hope you’ll join me there too, especially if you’re obsessed about all things food like I am.  Hey, there are far worse obsessions.

OK, just a shade past midnight … I’m outta here.

P.S.  And lest you think Sarah and I are the only crazy ones with the second shift here, Sandy from Eat Real, Kristen from Dine & Dish, Jaden from Steamy Kitchen and many other food writers are on with us too.  It’s quite the party on Twitter.  I think you’d be surprised at how little sleep you need to get by.  Martha Stewart goes on with only 3-4 hours of sleep a night, and if it’s good enough for her…

Sleep deprivation . . . the next best thing to the 25-hour day! :)

you’ve been a wonderful inspiration, Cate! Funny that you should mention pulled pork. I’ve cooked many a pork loin in my largest crockpot (I have 4 sizes). When it’s cooked after a long day’s simmer, I take it out and pull (shred) it. Part is for the current meal and the rest is put into smaller freezer bags for future meals.
Easy as peasy!

It is so nice to know we are all in this together, isn’t it? 1-2am is typically my bedtime… drives my husband crazy. It is the only time I have a clear head to write though. And, you wouldn’t believe how many other of my mom friends and I chat via IM during the wee hours as well. It is quite popular among us moms!

I am so proud and happy for your success, Cate. Sleep deprivation and all, I still don’t know how you do it!
Can’t wait to see your new site. Love the name!

Now – if I could only get your web designer before October, I’d have something new up too. She must be too busy working on all of your stuff :)
