Yesterday, Nick had a headache and high fever for most of the day, so we were in total hibernation mode. Between him getting sick and Madeline having a keeps-her-up-at-night cough, I’m lucky that their germs have escaped me … so far. So today, feeling better and seeing the gorgeous weather outside, Nick was itching to get out of the house. Even though I was up twice during the night with Madeline (that darn cough!), he told me that my pieced together 5 hours of sleep was enough (as if!). If anyone thought that there might be a little rest and relaxation on the agenda (hello? me!), they forgot to clue him in.
After running a few quick errands, we headed for the park with a picnic lunch in tow. We took turns chasing Madeline and making sure she didn’t drop my coveted car keys somewhere where we didn’t see. Ok, maybe Nick chased her more. But hey, it’s Mother’s Day.
Then when came home and while Madeline napped, Nick and I spent a few hours cleaning up the backyard and deck, and planting more herbs. Then we went for a bike ride. Then we made dinner. And now, finally at 8:30 pm, both kids are in bed and I can chill for a few minutes… phew! Who knew Mother’s Day was so much work? Oh and did I mention the one hour karate class I took with him on Friday for Mother’s Day?
Earlier in the week, my mom took Nick shopping so he could buy me something from Mother’s Day from both himself and Madeline. It was all he could do to wait until this morning to give me the presents. As soon as I cracked open a bleary eye this morning, and he told me I had enough sleep, he quickly asked, “Now?” “Yes, now,” I said and he scurried off to his room to get the presents that he had safely hidden in his bedroom closet.
To say that he put thought and care into the gifts he chose would be an understatement. As he took each item out of the gift bags, he explained why he bought each one. My mom said that any time he had to make a choice, he took all the items down off the shelf, and sat on the floor in the store to thoroughly examine each one to make sure he picked the right one. Oh how I love this child!
Among the gifts, he gave me a cookie and cupcake decorating kit, a pink notebook that he explained was small enough to fit into my purse, my favorite candy, heart shaped cookie cutters, refrigerator magnet clips and even bright, colorful plates for my “food photos.” I am a very lucky woman. A very lucky woman indeed.
Hope your day was just as wonderful!
What a fantastic Mother’s Day — you might have been short on sleep, but you have two great kids. And Nick is amazingly thoughtful. Glad your day was bright!
