I’ve been on a smoked salmon kick lately (it’s I’ve been on a smoked salmon kick lately (it’s so good for you), so when I saw that a local patisserie has a smoked salmon croissant available (weekends only), I added it to my list of things to seek out. I popped into @chocolatinenj early on Mother’s Day and was rewarded with this deliciousness. Layers of soft flaky croissant dough, tender smoked salmon, light whipped cream, thinly sliced red and green onion slivers and dotted with capers… it was every bit as amazing as you’d imagine it would be. If you’re local, don’t sleep on this one. 😋

Today would have been my friend Cathy’s 53rd bir Today would have been my friend Cathy’s 53rd birthday. Unfortunately she’s not here to celebrate because she died suddenly at age 49. I think of her often … every Mother’s Day because we spent most of them together since her husband worked weekends … when I discover a new food adventure (we once did a day long donut crawl) … when I’m sharing a special time with my kids knowing that her then-11 year old is growing up without her. Before she passed, I always appreciated every day, but since then, even more so. You never know what the next day can bring, so relish in the sunshine, surprise rainstorms, making wishes over railroad tracks and all the wonderful randomness life can throw your way. Don’t waste a single second, say yes, live on the outskirts of your comfort zone, laugh often, tell people you love them, give eight second hugs, and squeeze every ounce of joy you can out of life. Do it for the people who can’t. ✨

Random Wednesday Happenings

Cooperative
This little one fell at school today while dancing, and got a busted, bloody, swollen lip in return. I talked to her a few minutes after it happened, and she was happily sucking on an ice pop. The Director put Madeline’s hair up to keep it from getting bloody and darn it, she looks so cute. I try every day to coerce her into letting me do something, ANYTHING, with her hair, to no avail. Her teacher said after everyone saw her with her hair back, and her gorgeous eyes showing, all the kids kept coming up to her to tell her how beautiful she looked, so maybe there’s hope for tomorrow morning.

Cuteness
She picked these weeds flowers for me this afternoon and said, “Mommy, you can carry these when you marry your boyfriend.” Calm yourself, it doesn’t mean I have an announcement. It just means a very adorable little girl has a romantic streak. And gosh, when did she stop looking like a baby?? She needs to stop this growing up stuff.  I’m not nearly ready for her to look so grown-up.

Maxwell
A few of you asked questions about Maxwell. He is a 75 lb Golden Retriever. We adopted him from a rescue group that a friend recommended. He was lucky in that his history isn’t as terrible as they usually are when they’re rescued. He was one of two goldens owned by a husband and wife. The husband is very sick and they were no longer able to care for their dogs. Tomorrow will be two weeks that Maxwell has been with us. The kids adore him, and he has definitely acclimated himself really well. When his previous owners noted, in a letter direct from the dog to us, that he is a 75 pound lap dog, they weren’t kidding. If you’re on the couch, he will climb right on your lap. If you’re lying in bed, he gets as close as he can to you without being on top of you. As long as he learns to leave Madeline’s toys, for, well, Madeline, we’re golden. Ha.

Growing Up
People, we have a 9-year-old boy in the house. And I think there is a girl on his radar. Or something. Because the cologne and deodorant ritual has started. Lord help us. Not sure if this Mama is ready.

The kids told me they had a surprise for me on my camera. When I downloaded today’s pictures, I found this:
Maddie Hanging Out

And this:
Nick Hanging Out

Life is apparently really rough in the O’Malley household.

Look-Out
Wherein Maxwell wonders what the heck he has gotten himself into by joining this crazy family. Did you know the folks at Animal Planet have costumes for your favorite pet? They do! They very kindly sent Maxwell his own butterfly costume. I’m certain he can’t possibly express his gratitude enough.

Camera Shy

Maxwell - Golden Retriever - with Madeline

And a little bit of cuteness to finish us off. This is Madeline’s new party trick that she learned this week in school. She also knows all her ABCs but so far won’t let me capture it on video. We’re a work in progress, folks.

Tomorrow? FOOD! Namely sweets. Be here.

And one more thing, before I forget. If you buy a print from my Etsy shop during the month of October, you can enter the coupon code OCTSAVINGS and get free shipping (to US addresses). A bunch of new prints have been added, with more coming this weekend. Think about the pesky holidays that are closer than you think.

O’Malley out.

Oh, I almost didn’t recognize your little cutie with her hair clipped back! She looks absolutely adorable! Sorry to hear she had a mis-hap today, but she does seem like she came through it like a champ!
