When it comes to most everything in life, we have to decide what we’re going to take heed to. Especially when it comes to chemicals. If you follow every piece of printed “fact” out there, you will be heading down the rabbit hole in a dizzying speed.
As time goes on, we as a whole become smarter and smarter about what we’re doing to ourselves and our environment, and sometimes it can be information overload. To combat that, I try to make small changes, let them take a habit-forming stronghold, and move on to the next thing.
And so it was with sunscreen.
When I was a teenager, Sun-In and Coppertone were all the rage. We would pour the stuff on our bodies and hair and bake and bake and bake until we could bake no more. We’d grab whatever bottle was on sale at the local Woolworth, head to the shore, without a care in the world.
And back then, I’m not sure we knew any better.
But we do now.
And I have since a little after Nick was born. More and more data started coming out about sunscreens and all the junk in it that isn’t good for you, for your body, for your kids’ bodies.
And I started paying more and more attention.
Trips to Whole Foods and Wild Oats would result in finding the perfect sunscreen that was good for us to use, not too terrible on the wallet, smelled good, and went on nice and smooth.
These days, there is no reason not to be well informed. Information is everywhere, you just have to pick and choose what to believe, and what is best for you and your family.
Safe Mama has a great cheat sheet to help you in buying the best sunscreen, and finding a product that is free from parabens, phthalates, and other unpronounceable chemicals. Since a box from Goddess Garden Organics had just arrived on our doorstep, I was pretty stoked to find that it was on Safe Mama’s “approved” list.
The Goddess Garden Organics sunscreen line is all natural, chemical-free, and non-greasy. Which is a pretty sweet combination. Although it is a little pricier than its counterparts, it provides excellent coverage and is a little bit thicker than what you might be used to. It has a 30 SPF and rubs into your skin nicely. With both an adult and children’s line, and sunscreen available in both a pump or spray, you can find just what you need.
And now it’s your turn. One lucky winner will receive a bottle of the Goddess Garden Organics sunscreen to try for yourself (winner can choose which one they would like). Good luck!

Eating outside near the water — eating some awesome summer food at one of those outside restaurants (and I use that word loosely). And, then a walk. Love it.
What a great cheatsheet website! Favorite summer activity is cooking out.
I was definitely a Coppertone baby also but now I’ll be looking out for these other brands! I love just being outside in the summer…doing anything, so sunscreen is definitely necessary!
