To say Madeline was excited about joining the Girl Scouts would be an understatement. We first went to a meeting back in May, so she could meet the other Girl Scouts and be introduced to what it was all about.
Although she hung back a bit and was uncharacteristically shy, she enjoyed learning a new song, doing a short craft, and snack time.
Because, really, who wouldn’t?
And then she talked about it alllll summer.
Because that small taste was pretty much all she needed.
And, you know, Girl Scout cookies.
‘Nuff said.
So finally, two weeks ago, it got real. A registration meeting and official sign up.
Earlier that day, she must have reminded Nick six ways to Sunday that “tonight we’re going to Girl Scouts” and after about the third time, she was met with distinct eye rolls.
Because, you know, sixth graders.
And boys.
She has loved that he has been in Boy Scouts, and couldn’t wait to be like him.
The girl version, natch.
And as she listened with rapt attention as the leaders talked about all the fun that was coming up this year for her and her fellow Daisies (the first rung of Girl Scouts), well, she couldn’t have been more in.
And, you know, GIRL SCOUT COOKIES.
(You can totally tell where MY focus is, no? I mean, an inside connection to all the Do-Si-Dos that I shouldn’t be eating? Yes, please. A thousand times yes.)
Crafting. Sing-alongs. Snacks. Community service. Camping. Mini trips.
Life is good for a little girl in the Girl Scouts.
And what I love most of all? Is that she is continuing on in something I did as a child (the Girl Scouts of the USA have been around for over 100 years!). In fact, my Mom recently dug out my Brownie and Girl Scout sashes with pins and patches for me. Time to dust them off and take a trip down memory lane.
*And if YOU have a little one who wants to know more about joining the Girl Scouts (there are over 3 million members!), you can find out everything you need to know right here and you can see First Lady Michelle Obama’s PSA on the Girl Scouts here. She’s actually the National Honorary President of the Girl Scouts.

Awesome :) we’re starting year 5, our 1st year as Juniors! And I finally heeded the call as a leader… So much fun to be had!
They haven’t asked for leader volunteers yet, but I have a feeling it’s coming. It sounds like fun, but I’m already a class parent for her class, ice cream chair for the whole school, we volunteer with the animal rescue group … it’s so hard to say no sometimes…
I went up to Junior Girl Scouts and then stopped. Unfortunately my troop wasn’t so awesome (a lot of mean girls) and I didn’t have a great time but I just know it will be better for Madeline!
