Nick: What I Learned in Sixth Grade

by Cate on August 19, 2014

My creation

So with September rearing its ugly head, I realized I hadn’t done Nick’s “end of year” post. No better time than the present.

This past school year had Nick starting a new school, which brought about a lot of transition. Changing classes. Two different lockers. Many new kids (kids from two elementary schools join together for middle school), and the opportunity to rekindle some old friendships. New teachers (and many more than he had in fifth grade), and with that, new expectations. More homework. Earlier bus. Earlier dismissal time.

Just a whole lot of new, when it comes right down to it.

The first day, as early as it was, was off to a great start as he made a new friend at the bus stop. A friend that gave him the low-down on his new school, which teachers were awesome, and which ones she dreaded. They quickly developed a fast friendship, one of many he forged during the year.

The first semester was challenging as he slowly figured out what his new teachers expected of him and how best to fulfill that. He joined several after-school clubs, with technology and art being a clear favorite, and continued with both soccer and track. He managed to use the same backpack for the entire year, and, for the first year in the past three or four, he didn’t lose his lunch box once.

Score one for maturity!

Math and Science are still his favorite subjects, although they were clearly harder this year, and he also loved the introduction of Wood Shop and came home with quite a few new projects that he made on his own during sixth grade.

And with that, blink and you miss it, the year was done. No longer the frosh of the school, he is, dare I say it, excited to go back. While we’re not quite ready to say good-bye to the summer, we’re starting to slowly warm up to the idea of Fall weather, which started none too early, and the routine of school days again.

What was your favorite part of sixth grade? Social Studies
What was your least favorite part of sixth grade? My ELA (English Language Arts) class
What will you miss about school over the summer? I will miss seeing my Social Studies teacher; he’s awesome
What do you want to be when you grow up? As of right now, a photographer
What are some things you learned in fifth grade? How to use a lock on my locker, building things in my wood shop class on my own
What excites you about going to seventh grade? Having a few new teachers

A look back…
