Review: The Farmer’s Dog {National Love Your Pet Day}

When it comes to our pets, they are just like our family. So, we should feed them just like our family, right? Let me introduce you to The Farmer’s Dog.

I mean, let’s cut right to the chase, shall we?

When your dog’s food arrives with his name emblazoned right on the label, you KNOW it was made especially for him. And since today is National Love Your Pet Day, I thought it was the perfect time to share details about this new pet food company I recently learned about.

Like, man, we should all feel that special!

If you’re a regular follower of Sweetnicks, you know I eat a pretty clean diet. I just finished another round of Whole30, and am in the blissful phase of Food Freedom Forever right now. And my kids? Well, for the most part, they eat pretty much the same. Yes, there is a snack drawer in our kitchen that may or may not have Oreos in it, but we follow the 80/20 rule, which means that 80% of our diet is clean and unprocessed food (mine leans a little more towards 90%), and 20% is all YOLO (you only live once).

And, to be honest, why should our dog’s food be any different?

The answer: It shouldn’t be.

Our bulldog’s food is grain-free and full of ingredients that I can pronounce and understand.

But The Farmer’s Dog takes it one step further.

When they reached out a few months ago, to tell me about their mission, I was all ears.

Because I want to do right by my dog, of course.

Their meal plans have been developed by veterinarians, and are specific to YOUR dog, its breed, and their dietary needs. All the ingredients are USDA Human-grade and all-natural, and even human-tested. When you are going through their step-by-step menu plan, you tell them the age of your dog, if he has any allergies, what his energy level is like, how his weight is, and then you can choose from three different food flavors, turkey, beef, or pork.

For Herschel Walker, I went with beef, and the ingredients list is exactly this:

Now that’s food you can feel good about giving your dog.

I received two weeks worth of food, and it arrived in pre-portioned, frozen, flat packages that make for easy storage in our freezer. Although the food arrives frozen, it’s not considered a “deep freeze.” It’s frozen right after cooking, and on your door step just a few days later. I take one or two packages out when I need them, and they defrost in the refrigerator. Just snip and pour.

Because Herschel was already on a dry food diet, I mixed a little of The Farmer’s Dog food in with his regular food, adding a little more every day to make it easy for his system to get used to the new food.

To say he inhaled it would be an understatement.

I mean, I don’t blame him. It’s REAL FOOD.

Now, the bottom line. Yes, it IS a little more expensive than the mass-produced shelf-stable dog food you can get at the grocery store or pet store, with all those added preservatives.

The good stuff usually is.

But … when you think about the fact that you may save potential vet visits because your pet has a healthier diet, then it kind of balances out, doesn’t it?

There’s a popular dietary meme floating around (this is one of them), and I think about it a lot when I might get sticker-stock doing grocery shopping for our family.
