I am hardly scientific when it comes to cooking or baking. I’ve always been a fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants girl. Outside of the kitchen too. But recently I’ve slowly come to appreciate better measurement devices when it comes to kitchen tools. Although I still, um, use the same measuring cups when it comes to portioning out liquids versus mass, I am at least trying to be a little more conscious of it. Hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?
As far as food scales go, I had one years ago and gave it up in the interest of gaining some valuable real estate back in the kitchen. I hate when my kitchen gets bogged down with a lot of extra gadgets and the like. I don’t use bread makers, pasta machines, or ice cream makers. Instead, a lot of double-duty tools, and items that have to earn their space in my cupboards and drawers, you know?
That being said, I actually wrote “food scale” on my refrigerator notepad some months ago, intending to keep my eyes out for one that was on sale. And then the generous folks at the OXO Blogger Outreach Program offered one up for grabs. For me. And for you too! It was too good an opportunity to pass up. For both of us. It’s sitting right here on my desk, waiting to be fedex’d to you. The slim design is perfect for stashing in a cupboard, within reach when you need it, but small enough to not waste space unnecessarily.
I just started using it this week, and I’ve got to say, weighing things is kind of fun. And addicting. Last week, I read that Katrina Markoff, the brains behind the amazing Vosges chocolate line, uses beakers in her kitchen to measure everything (like these on Amazon). (You can read her own blog right here). How cool is that?
So let me tell you about the cool features of this food scale (5 lb capacity) …
- the weight display pulls out from the machine, so you can easily see the weight of your item, even if it’s oversized.
- the platform can be removed for easy cleaning
- it measures in 1/8 oz (US) and 1g (metric) increments
- there is an indicator to let you know how much capacity is left on the scale
Now to get one for your very own kitchen… One (US) winner will be chosen by the random number generator. Contest closes at 5 pm EST on Monday, March 19th, 2012. You may enter by commenting on this post and telling me your must-have kitchen tool. You may gain extra entries by tweeting this post, following me on Twitter, or following me on Pinterest (and coming here to tell me you did these things). So you can have up to four entries total. You will be contacted by me via e-mail on Tuesday if you were the winner. Entries without e-mail addresses (which are kept private) will be disqualified. If I do not hear from you within 48 hours with your mailing address, I will choose another winner. Your odds of winning depends on how many entries are received.
Good luck!
Until Sunday…
Thank you sooo much for this giveaway! I’ve been wanting a food scale for about a year now when I started watching my food portions and slimmed down a few pounds (apparently, portion control works!).
My must-have kitchen tool is my grater. It does a wonderful job with innocent things starting from cauliflower and cucumbers to naughty ones like sharp cheddar and frozen butter.

Multiple sets of measuring spoons and measuring cups! Could really use that scale, thanks for offering it!
My current must have kitchen gadget is an instant digital thermometer – I use it to test if my turkey burgers and chicken are done and I’m no longer paranoid about having the food undercooked and getting some sort of food sickness.
I’ve had my eye on the OXO food scale for a while – glad to hear you enjoy it. It’s on my “to treat myself with” list but I have a tendency to never treat myself but rather the people in my life I care about instead. People are always telling me how ridiculous I am, but I can’t help myself – seeing the people I love happy makes me happy. :-) (One of the many reasons I love your blog!)
My must have kitchen tool is a trusty sharp knife…necessary for my kitchen meditation of chopping. :-)
And I follow you on Pinterest! :-)
Oooo, I would love a food scale! I think it would be really helpful…
