But there’s a new asshat in town… 🙄 Clifford is now a freaking rockstar. His tumor and age have slowed him down a LOT and he virtually never misbehaves, and we are seriously so proud of him. Lola, on the other hand, is still full blown PUPPY. Tonight I’m assembling a gate to replace the wooden one she ate through. 😂 Berners love wood and she is OBSESSED with being in the kitchen. So one new metal gate coming right up as soon as I can figure out how to put it together.
Last week when I met the owners of the new French Last week when I met the owners of the new French bakery in town, I told them how happy I was that they were opening … because now I had an endless source for gifts for my mom’s future birthdays and Christmases. She was born in Paris and we’ve grown up with a healthy appreciation for French things … starting with their pastries and baguettes, but so much more. My daughter took her first trip to Paris last year and thoroughly enjoyed the croissants there and she deemed the ones at @chocolatinenj just as perfect. No surprise there since the owner is a French pastry chef! If you’re local and haven’t been, do make a point to stop in and visit. They’re open Wednesday through Sunday and have a wide selection of sweet and savory items and a few French retail selections as well. We’ve tried the macarons, the Croque Monsieur, the croissants, the tomato tarts, the baguette … basically we’re working our way through their display case in due time. Don’t miss this one - enjoy!

I wouldn’t have these awesome little snippets of them growing up. I only wish I had more. Appreciate and document the little mundane things, for they are the very fabric of your life.

I don’t eat French fries often, but when I do, I I don’t eat French fries often, but when I do, I’m going to make it count. Doo Wop Eats opened a few months ago in downtown Denville and their fries are LEGIT. They are hand cut and taste the way fries should … like potatoes! I add a sprinkle of salt and dunk them in a side of their special sauce and they are pure perfection. You can order a small bucket or a large one (better for sharing!), or as a side item with one of their other delicious menu items like their cheeseburgers, fried chicken sandwiches or cheesesteak. I do believe they’re the best fries in town. I said what I said. Doo Wop’s menu celebrates all your favorite Jersey shore boardwalk treats, including Fried Oreos, clam strips and milk shakes and has a fun vibe for kids and families. 😍
The Grinder Salad, a recipe I found on tiktok that The Grinder Salad, a recipe I found on tiktok that takes all of your favorite ingredients from a grinder (or sub) sandwich and makes it into a delicious chopped salad. It’s as easy as putting everything in a bowl and chopping it up. Perfect for busy days and lazy nights, light meals and warm weather choices. Ingredient list below. Enjoy!

One bag or arugula
One container of cherry tomatoes 
Quarter pound of hard salami
8 Oz of fresh mozzarella
One small red onion
1/3 cup banana peppers 
Handful of fresh basil
Half cup Italian salad dressing
3 T Kewpie mayo
2 T red wine vinegar 
Sea salt and black pepper

Chop it all up, add a half box of ditalini pasta, cooked. Mix to combine.

We had a fun little board party this week and the We had a fun little board party this week and the delicious whipped Brie I shared earlier was front and center. If you haven’t heard of board parties, it’s when every guest makes a different type of food board and brings it - so much fun noshing ensues! With toasted baguette slices, cornichons and local honey, this was mostly a French-inspired board. So simple to pull together and totally my kind of meal.

In Which Soccer Season Starts

She sat on the couch and I bent down to put on her shin guards and lace up her soccer cleats.

“I am so excited about tonight,” she said, with a big smile spreading across her face.

Man, I love that little face.

“You are? I’m so glad! How come?” I asked.

“I’m excited about seeing my friends again and playing soccer.”

I cautioned her that this time I think we only know one other person on the team. The son of a friend, that Madeline has only met a handful of times.

“That’s ok, I’ll make new friends.”

And so it goes.

That bright little spirit. The go-get-’em attitude.

Fully present.

One of my firm rules, since Nick was old enough to start playing sports, was that the kids had to play sports. One sport. I don’t care which one. They can try a few until they see what they like best. Or stick with one. But there will be sports.

It just teaches them so much. Things that books can’t. Teaches them things they learn by doing, by being involved in. Working together for a common goal. Helping each other. Socializing with kids outside of their normal social circles. Being fit and active. How to lose and still be ok. How to handle winning gracefully. How to problem solve. How to meet their goals and objectives. And loving the great outdoors.

And so much more.

I played softball for years on our town teams growing up, and my Dad coached. My sister played field hockey in high school and college.

Nick started playing soccer when he was 4, and although he has tried other sports (even baseball for a season and karate for six months), he loves soccer and it has been a constant year after year. He plays two seasons a year (Spring and Fall), and has had amazing growth over the years. What started as something I said he had to do, has blossomed into something he really loves doing.

I started Madeline with soccer last year, and she loved it from the start. Playing a sport that you see your older brother play certainly helped add to her fondness for it.

They both play on a town team, which I love because it exposes them to new people that they might not have otherwise met. Kids that they might not go to school with. And that makes future social encounters even better … because then when they go to summer camp … or a new school … there are already familiar faces from the town activities they enjoy together. We actually met a neighbor for the first time at last week’s soccer practice. We’ve been living two doors apart for the past 10 years, and had never met before then.

Madeline’s team started practice last week (Nick starts tonight). As soon as we figured out which team was hers, she went running out onto the field right away. Two girls, five boys, I watched as they all sat down on the field, holding their soccer ball in their laps. From fifty feet away, I could see her twisting her hands around as it came time to introduce herself. Although she is a fearless wonder, even she gets a shy moment every now and then.

Thank goodness for friends that bring extra water when we forget ours.

And then they were off. Kicking the ball to each other. Stealing the ball. Dribble, dribble, dribble. Nick and I cheered from the sideline as Madeline stole the ball from the coach not once, but twice, taking off with it like a speed demon.

This is what it’s all about, folks. This is our now.

    I am definitely going to enroll my future kids in sports also. A must that I wish I had done when I was a kid.

    Paige tried ballet last year and really liked it, but she’s been waiting to play soccer for years. So when I gave her a choice this summer, she chose soccer — and is so excited to get started. And Will? He’s still playing, despite being given many other options. Sports are so good for their little minds and bodies, aren’t they?

    I love this post. :) I also think it’s amazing how supportive all of you are of each other as a family. When I was growing up, my parents didn’t have/make time to come to my little league games or dance classes…. kudos to you for making the time to do so, and being such a great mom all around!

      Thank you, Monica, that means a lot. We were talking about the soccer practice schedule last night because this Saturday, with soccer picture taking and games, there is some overlap with two kids, so The Ex and I will have to divide and conquer. Nick immediately said “I pick you.” I started to say something, but he said, “You missed one practice of mine last year, it’s my turn this time.” And that’s it right there. Out of all the practices, games, concerts, PTA meetings, and the like, I have missed one. Just one. And he remembers. That is why we do it. That right there.
