I Heart Instagram {and some of our other favorite photo apps}

April 9, 2013 · Narrative

Untitled

There’s a popular story where a photographer is eating dinner at a friend’s house. The host remarks on the guest’s photos and how awesome they are. And, of course, asks what type of camera he uses.

Later that night, the guest and the host are talking about the dinner, and the guest says, “Dinner was great, what kind of stove do you have?”

Making the point abundantly clear. It’s not the equipment, it’s the user.

The best camera you have is the one that’s within reach.

Untitled

Which is one of the many reasons why I love Instagram as much as I do. Because my phone is always in my pocket or (usually) within reach.

And I love that it has spurred a love of photography and documenting moments with the kids. When we’re going about our day-to-day, Nick and Madeline are capturing little moments, big moments, and sharing them. Nick thinks about composition and color. Madeline thinks about whether a photo is good enough to share with the world at large. If she’s in a shot I take, she has veto power if I’m allowed to share it, and there are some times when she’ll ask me not to, or for a retake.

January 2013 in Instagram

My creation

Knowing what’s on tap for some of our February and March, I almost can’t wait for those Instagram round-ups, but I’m really careful on not wishing for tomorrow and not enjoying the present. I didn’t always used to be that way; that’s definitely an after-kids affect for me. I feel like the time is so fleeting, particularly when they’re little, I consciously don’t look too far ahead.

You can see the December review here, and November, and October, and September.

Tomorrow? Eat.Live.Be. and a new egg recipe.

DIY: Mod Podge + Fabric Scraps = Happy Furniture

January 10, 2013 · Narrative

Untitled
Quick little DIY post tonight, then I am hauling my exhausted little self up to bed.

I have a million projects in the works around the house.

Sometimes I get halfway through and stop because I need inspiration again.

Or because a new project had to take precedence for whatever reason.

Or it’s a particularly arduous task and I need a break.

Or, in this case, a slew of major holidays get in the way.

But tonight I was determined to finish this little project and cross it off my list.

And I did.

I actually bought the fabric I needed for it over two months ago. And the only reason I know that is because I instagrammed a picture.

Thank goodness for Instagram, because otherwise, who knows how I’d keep track of things?

And as an aside, I wish Instagram would date pictures properly, instead of “two months.” If flickr, Picasa, and the rest of them can, then Instagram needs to get with the program.

So the project.

In our kitchen, we have a mini table and four chairs. Originally the table and chairs were in Nick’s room, long ago when he was Madeline’s age. When we moved back into this house over three years ago, we decided to put it in the kitchen, creating a little snack/homework area for the kids.

December 2012 in Instagram

January 8, 2013 · Narrative

My creation
Wow. This one was seriously hard to put together. I’m limited to 36 photos, and I was doing fine until I got to December 24th. Through the end of the month.

Between Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Years’ Eve, and our trip to Bethlehem, the Aquarium, and Liberty Science Center… all in the space of one weeks’ worth of time … I had to make some really hard choices.

Which I consider to be a really good thing.

But it was a very full and happy month.

And that happens to be my very favorite kind.

You can see the November review here, and October, and September.

September 2012 in Instagram

October 8, 2012 · Photos

September was a rough month. I can’t remember a time when I have been so happy to see a month end. Lots of unexpected bumps in the road. I’m putting a lot of pressure on October to really step up to the plate. Not just for me, but for others we know who are having a rough go of it.

Looking back over our Instagram photos for September, there were a lot of happy moments too. Scads of them. And that’s where I try to focus. On joy. Finding it. And remembering it. I have definitely embraced the Instagram madness, and I knew I’d love it from the start. I can’t wait to put together an Instagram album at the end of the year to reflect on all sorts of levels of joy.

Until then, here’s our September.

Weekend Photos in Review {Instagram Version}

July 15, 2012 · Narrative

I fell in love with Instagram sometime last year.  I loved it from afar though, as it wasn’t on my phone (BlackBerry).  Those awesome Instagram filters, giving photos a unique feel to them.  Love.  A few weeks ago, my brother-in-law gave me his old iPhone, so I now have an Instagram account of my very own (you can follow me here).  Smitten for sure.  This weekend, something new … this Weekend Photos in Review is an all-Instagram version.

WPIR - used books galore

WPIR - tough princess

WPIR - swimming lessons

WPIR - sunny sky

WPIR - sleeping sadie

WPIR - sleeping baby
